Education How To Overcome Fear And Have Faith In Your Writing Abilities

I once knew a trainer who would literally get sick to their stomach when they had to write a manual. They were a greater trainer. Their courses were well received. They were able to organize their work well. They were articulate. They spoke well. They even wrote well -- when they wrote. But they were so frightened of writing that they would make themselves sick whenever they had to write anything larger than a memo. Which would have made it hard for them to become a writer! Public speaking is known to be the most common fear people have. Even greater than death. But I wonder if that's only because people admit to the fear of public speaking. I wonder sometimes if the only reason the greatest fear isn't writing is because people have a problem admitting they are afraid of it. There are many reasons for people to fear writing. But if they allow that fear to hold them back they will never produce that book everyone has inside them. In this article I'm going to show you how to overcome six of the most common fears and have faith in your writing abilities. 1. Fear of hard work. No, I'm not talking about being lazy. Writing is hard work. People are frequently afraid that it's too hard for them to do. So they are afraid to start. A good system will help with this fear by splitting the writing process up into components that are easy to do. 2. Fear of never finishing. Writing a book or an eBook is a complex, long piece of writing. The sheer size of the effort can be daunting. The solution to this fear is to begin with small pieces. Write paragraphs. Write single pages. Just write and write and write. Little pieces at first and slowly grow into long pieces as your confidence builds. 3. Fear of the result. People are far harsher critics than their neighbors ever are. We all want to be perfect little boys and girls. Sometime we are stopped by the fear that the book or eBook won't be any good. We let our worries about the quality of our writing get in the way of writing. Knowing what people judge our writing on will help overcome the fear. Writing like we talk will help remove the reason for our fear. Practice will eradicate the need for fear. 4. Fear of other's judgment. I sometimes wonder if the reason we are such harsh critics is that we are so afraid of what others will think of our writing. In high school we called this feeling peer pressure. The ultimate key to overcoming this fear is to be confident in our abilities. Partially this is recognizing that you can't please everyone. There will always be those who love your work. And there will always be those that hate it. And to realize that most people can't judge us. They don't have the skills. If we meet certain very limited criteria, the book or eBook will be well received. Even if our teachers would have hated it! 5. Fear of complexity. Let's face it. A book or eBook is a complex piece of writing. Far more complex than an article or even a white paper. The sheer complexity of the task can easily overwhelm us. The key to overcoming this is a system that helps you organize the book before you write. 6. Fear of being overwhelmed. I'm not sure if this is properly a fear or simply being overwhelmed. Between the complexity and the size and the sheer number of different points required in a book, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the task. This confusion can be interpreted as fear. And it can be amplified into a fear. The key to overcoming this is to break the task and the book into tiny tasks. To design before you do. To know exactly where you are going and how you're going to get there. customized writing
