Preserve the past to ensure a better future: career option in preservation of historical monuments


Can you imagine a world without Pyramids or the leaning tower of Pisa or Taj Mahal? Or just imagine the sculptures on Mount Rushmore do not exist anymore. Even worse, imagine a world where we don't have clue about our historical past and we don't know about the type of buildings our ancestors build and the way they used to construct buildings and live. It is like losing a part of ourselves, our rich architectural and cultural tradition and living in a kind of void. But hold on, there are some people just devoted to this aspect of historical preservation. They are into the field of general historic preservation and conservation field. The professionals in this field are concerned with the maintaining and protecting historical structures. Other names for the discipline or sub-disciplines include urban conservation, landscape preservation, built environment conservation, built heritage conservation, object conservation, and immovable object conservation. Historic preservation includes the preservation of old and historic structures, which includes their restoration and proper maintenance. You may work in the exact restoration of the buildings of historical importance, and thus you need to know the context and information regarding that particular historical period as also various construction techniques related to preservation and conservation. Thus, a solid knowledge of history and technical knowledge in building construction, restoration and rehabilitation is needed in order to pursue an occupation in this field. Main responsibilities of conservation workers are conducting research on architectural history, restoring old buildings, conserving specific locations etc. Even though the job responsibilities vary, some of the common tasks include site management, building conservation, preservation planning, landscape preservation and preservation design. Designed preservation plans are submitted to higher authorities for approval. It should be ensured that all the designed plans comply with federal regulations. Thus, in order to keep our architectural tradition alive and keep us informed about the past visually through buildings that used to exist at that particular period, the role of general historic preservation and conservation professionals is of utmost importance. They are responsible for giving a gift of unique and a valuable tradition of perfectly preserved buildings through which we can connect to our past and build upon our future.
