Education How To Deal With Writers Block
Tuesday, July 24, 2012
One of the hardest things for creative people to deal with is the concept of writers block. This is essentially where you are stuck for new ideas and can't figure out where to start. I have come up with a few ideas to help combat this problem. Get away from your keyboard. I have always found my best ideas come to me when I am not working or trying to work. So go outside and take a walk or play with your kids, pets, toys or even watch some television. Anything that takes your mind away from the task at hand will sometimes allow things to flow better. As soon as a good idea strikes take a walk back to your keyboard and start writing. Get some exercise. One of the best things you can do to get your creative juices flowing is exercise. Exercise stimulates blood flow and the brain. Sometimes all it takes is 20 minutes on the treadmill or out jogging to put you into the writer's mindset. Consume a little sugar and or coffee. This is a trick I used to use for brainstorming sessions in my office. I would always make sure there was a bowl of jelly beans available in our boardroom. Also I tried to make coffee runs before important meetings. Sugar and caffeine are well known stimulants for brain activity. I'm not suggesting that you become an addict in any way, in fact consuming sugar regularly will eventually slow you down. Once in a while however a little sugar boost might be all you need to help you come up with ideas. Ask a friend for help. I usually use this as a last resort. The other day I was struggling for a good topic for my blog, so I sent instant messages out to a few of my friends and colleagues. Instantly I got replies from people with a number of good ideas. The great thing about this exercise was that the people who responded, did so with ideas that were customized to me. One of the ideas came from a student of mine who suggested I talk about a subject that is near and dear to him because I taught him this lesson. It was a subject that I knew a great deal about and had never produced any content surrounding it. I instantly got ignited and started working. It's never difficult for someone who is creative to talk or write about what they know. Sometimes all we need is the right subject matter to discuss. Look outside your box of reference whenever in need.
