Education Distance Learning at College or University

Tuition fees are getting higher, and many colleges and universities are cutting classes to save money, leaving fewer options for students pursuing a post-secondary education. Distance learning is a good alternative, but it can be far more challenging than you may expect. Used to sitting in a class and taking notes, you may not be prepared for the time it takes to attend a distance learning class. You need to be able to read the equivalent amount of information in printed material, and have the time required to write essays, which are often used instead of tests or group work in an online class.

For this reason, drop-outs are higher for distance learning than in other classes. It is important to start out understanding the differences and time requirements for a class taken through distance education. What happens? Your instructor will prepare reading materials, and will typically provide a basic schedule for the class, including essay due dates. Make sure you keep on top of this schedule. If you are starting to founder or fall behind, talk to the instructor and let them know. They may be able to help you set up a schedule to get caught up, and might have some tips on how to stay on top of the work for their particular class. If you take care of your class requirements, a good schedule, and communication with your instructor, you can be successful with the heavier load of distance learning classes.
