Education Chinese Foot Binding
Saturday, July 21, 2012
There was an ancient tradition in China in which the feet of young children were tightly bound to stop them growing. The foot was repeatedly bound as it grew to force the toes under the foot and stop it growing in length. The reason for this tradition was that a smaller foot was considered more erotic and a much larger dowry could be expected for her family in exchange for marriage. Very dainty and small decorative shoes were used for the foot. The result was a very painful foot that made it difficult to walk and a lifelong of disability, but that was the historical nature of the Chinese culture that this took place in. The females involved in this form of what is essentially a torture were very accepting of the fate and they knew about the need to get a good dowry when they were married. So, despite the agony and disability, they almost always willing went along with it. Due to social pressures and progress that tradition has finally died out, but there are a number of older females in China are still alive. They are certainly suffering the consequences of the torture that they were put through. Once this process was begun, it was often considered worse to stop it as the damage had been done to the foot and the way they walk. Those with bound feet often had a characteristic walk that is stereotypically associated with the traditional Chinese geisha girl. There is not treatment for the Chinese bound foot and they tended to suffer throughout their live with it.
