Education 5 Easy Strategies To Start Writing A Book

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Writing a book is hard work. But there are some easy strategies to get started. Here are five: 1. Edit Yesterday's writing. Part of the problem with getting started writing is restarting your writing voice. Even if you write conversationally, you still have a slightly different voice on paper. By re-reading and editing your writing from the prior session, you'll get started thinking in the same vein. By the time you finish editing you'll be ready to start writing. And not only that you'll be ready to start up again right where you left off. Neat huh? 2. Always outline in detail. A book is not an article. With an article you can carry the four or five points you want in your head. You might even be able to think of them on the fly. But a book is too complex. You need to organize what is to be said long before you sit down to write. Not only that but you need to design your book down to the level of a paragraph. Why paragraph? Because if you know your topic, you can talk for 1-2 minutes about one point on a PowerPoint slide. And if you can talk for 1-2 minutes about a point, you can write a 100 word paragraph about that point. 3. Write something else. If you really, really, really can't get going then try writing something else entirely. This is where speed writing really shines. Pick three words at random - one noun, one verb and one adjective or adverb. Now write as much as you can in five minutes using that sentence as your inspiration. Start with that phrase as your first sentence. Do not go back, do not correct, do not rewrite. Just write as quickly as you can - ever forward, not looking backwards. As soon as five minutes is up... stop. Even if you're in the middle of a sentence. You should be able to start writing something useful now. 4. Take a break but don't stop writing. Agatha Christie said, "The best time for planning a book is while doing the dishes." Sometimes the reason you can't write is simple exhaustion. So take a break. But let the mind continue to write. Don't force it but don't fight it. Get some sleep. Hemmingway claimed that he did most of his writing during sleep. He said "I learned never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there in the deep part of the well, and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it." 5. Sit down and just do it. No one said that writing was easy. Sometime you just have to sit there and start putting out the words. In time they'll come correctly. And you can always rewrite them tomorrow. Of course, this works best if you've already written them as a detailed outline.
