Education The Secret To Writing The Perfect Book

Perfect. It is an oft-used term for so many different aspects of life. Perfection is that elusive, ultimate goal for anything a person cares to excel at. It is an ideal that keeps us reaching for the stars. My advice? Spend less time reaching and more time getting your book published. Every year, I teach hundreds of students how to write and publish their own books. Those students come to my classes with the intention of learning how to make money as published authors. I teach them everything they need to know, but many still have not published their books. That's because they became bogged down in their search for perfection. One student of mine in particular started to write her book back in 1967. She came to my workshop a few years ago and was still not finished with her manuscript. When I asked why she didn't just publish her book and get it to start working for her, she simply explained that she was in a writing club meant to improve her work. She said the club members were constantly making changes and corrections and many areas would become stalled and not move forward. This student of mine will likely never reach a point of completion. She has been working on her book for so long that her view of what makes it perfect will never come to fruition. Although she is an extreme case, I see so many of my students fall into the trap that I like to call the "perfection problem." So what exactly is the secret to writing the perfect book? It's to understand that there is no such thing as a perfect book! Once an author comes to terms that a book will never reach unattainable standards of perfection, he or she can move on and focus on finishing the manuscript and getting it published. A mediocre book that is actually being purchased and read is much better than a book that never ends up being finished. If you don't believe me, visit Amazon.com and search through most book reviews. You will see that 90 percent of reviewers will give a book a positive assessment, and 5 to 10 percent of reviewers will be negative. Learn to get over the negativity quickly, and you are on your way to the real accomplishment: finishing your book so that people have the chance to review it at all!

Current Online Writer's Landscape It used to be in the 19th Century that writers used to get paid per word. Magazines and other publications needed good content and paid writers by the word. That's why many of the popular 19th writers like Charles Dickens were so verbose. Charles Dickens novels weren't long and had tons of detailed description about everything because they were trying to portray everything in detail. In addition, it's no longer about words, but it's now about keywords. To be more specific, it's about keywords that people will search for on the major search engines like Google. Education Beginning To Journal

Journaling, it isn't something you hear a lot of people doing anymore. In a day in age where blogging is the hottest thing, taking out a pen and paper to write manually is almost unheard of, doesn't that take too much time when we can type so much faster? Maybe, but, the benefits can sometimes outweigh the time issue that is involved. Sure, I love blogging. I am a blogger and I believe blogging has benefits that are quite similar to that which I receive from journaling, but journaling is a bit more private for me, and thus still appropriate for me to engage in because quite frankly I won't share everything on my blog. A blog after all is almost permanent and can be read by almost anyone who has access to the Internet and the savvy to search for you. Journaling only the other hand, is just as easy, if not easier than blogging. With journaling you can talk freely, through the written word without fear or reservation. You can scrawl in handwriting commonly known as chicken scratch where it is almost illegible but can be therapeutic in benefits to you. What it looks like doesn't matter, grammar doesn't matter. Honestly, it doesn't even matter if it makes good sense. It is for your benefit and your benefit only. So, what you write frankly does not matter. What does matter is that you write. That you allow the feelings, thoughts and emotions that you feel in your heart and mind to be released onto paper. With journaling the most important thing is that you do it. You just start writing really, it is as simple as that. Write about how you feel, write about what you are worrying about, write about what you hope to accomplish, or what you wish you could do or be. Write about anything and everything in your life. Share your prayers, your hopes, your dreams, write letters to yourself or record letters to God. There are so many options and the process can leave you feeling so much better you will definitely want to do it again. That's why journaling is a bit addictive. Once you start, most likely, you won't want to stop. You will begin to fill journal after journal excited about the possibilities of filling those stark white pages with print. It will become a hobby, a true pastime that you continue to enjoy for many years.

Education How To Write A Book Proposal That Will Get You Published

So you've written your book. You've found an agent. They loved what they saw. Now you've got one question in mind "How to write a book proposal that will get you published?" The key is to understand why you're writing the proposal and to structure your proposal appropriately. At one time there were two proposals. The first was produced by the writer and really just expanded on the query letter. What exactly are you going to write? Add a couple of lines for who you are and sit back. The editor then researched the market for the book and prepared the proposal to put before the executive publishers. That's not the case today. The economy has removed the luxury of having an insider prepare the proposal. It falls on the writer to write a single proposal covering both market and what the book is about. So the way to write a book proposal that will get you published is to write a proposal that will convince the executive publisher to invest money in your book. And since most books lose money, that can be difficult. To do that you need to write a book proposal that is part description of the book and part marketing tool. You should always include the following sections: 1. An executive summary, because executives are too busy to read. Hit just the highlights. Who you are. Why you are perfect to write the book. What the book is about. What the market for the book is. If you've hit a page, single spaced, you're being too detailed. Rewrite it. Think rear cover copy. Quick, specific, highlights. This is what really sells your book. Blow this and the rest of your proposal won't be read. 2. An overview and introduction. This is where you'll sell the idea of the book. Think in terms of what you'll write and why you are perfect to write it. Keep it simple and high level. This is the section that will sell editors and middle management. 3. The market and competition. Who has already published in this area? Why would people buy your book rather than theirs? How big is the market? Here is where you're going to prove that there is a market for your book and that you can get a nice slice of it. 4. Outline of the book. So now that you've gotten the important part out of the way, back to the product itself. What's it going to look like? 5. Two sample chapters. Here's where you're going to prove that you can actually write. 6. Publishing details. How do you see the book's end product? This is for those people that need to actually print the book. 7. About the author. So far you've (hopefully) sold them on the book. Now you have to prove that you are the right person to write it. Once you've written all this up, you need to package it well. After all, like any other product packaging can either help or hurt sales. So package it well. Make it look good! Just as you would wear a suit to an interview, you need to make a good first impression. So have you gotten the impression that a book proposal is a marketing piece? I hope so. That's how to write a book proposal that will get you published. Realize it is your sales pamphlet for the decision maker. And make it look good in their eyes. Make them buy. thesis writing service

Education It's A Process

Writing is a process. Opinion? Fact! Many people I know are taken aback when they make an attempt to write a piece of any substantial length. They think like this: "He sits down at his lovely, mahogany desk and gets out his pad of paper or his antiquated typewriter. He flexes his fingers, and grabs his favorite fountain pen or starts typing on the keys. Suddenly, words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters fly onto the paper. After some pre-determined time, Real Writer puts down his pen or takes his fingers off the keys, stretches, sighs a sigh of satisfaction, and gets up from the desk. He brushes his hands together - another successful day of writing done and pages of manuscript in the hopper."- Dawn Goldberg This may be a nice image to have, but it's far from the truth. Real writers actually go through a clearly defined, 3 step process in writing everything longer than one sentence. Before-writing: (For lack of a better term!) Before-writing is pretty much just planning. Throwing ideas around. Chucking everything on paper. Lots of writers have a little book just for scribbling random ideas, quotes, sayings, phrases, or anything that might be useful. It's completely disorganized and looks like it belongs in the bin, but writers live by it! It often winds up being an invaluable source of creativity, and has made many writers rich and famous. This step is crucial, so don't skip it even when you're in a hurry! Writing: Self-explanatory... I hope. This is sometimes the only step anyone takes note of. People think it's a waste of time to plan and edit their work. As long as it's done. Bad idea!!! But you do need something to edit, so while this is the least important of the steps, it's still necessary. Obviously. After-writing: This is the revising and editing of your work. A common misconception with editing is that all this entails is cutting out bad sentences and phrases. Wrong again! In most cases, you've gotta almost re-write the whole piece! If you're looking to create a really good piece of writing, you've got to edit properly, and if that means writing the whole piece over, then do it, don't be lazy. One more thing- don't do all 3 steps at once, which I know is tempting! Don't write whole paragraphs when you plan. Don't edit while you're writing. You need to be able to view your work as a finished product, on which to improve. Okay, knock yourself out!

Education How To Start A Novel

How to start a novel begins by writing a short summary like those that will appear on the back when it is published. Many novelists will start writing a novel by defining its essence, a short, conscious statement of about 2-3 sentences, 5 at most, which can later be trimmed even further. With this statement or description of your novel, the novelist or novel ghostwriter can then begin asking questions and filling in the blanks. In other words, consider the summary of your initial story to be similar to those that appear on the back of almost every published novel. The author has written a few sentences describing his or her novel, but has not told the potential reader everything, or even spoiled the ending. Nevertheless, while at the book store browsing books to read, you will have a better understanding about the novel by reading the back. At the same time, you will also have a great deal of questions, which have been focused or directed by the few sentences describing the novel. This is how to start a novel. The answers to these questions, when applied to your own short novel summary, will help you to begin to outline your novel. Once the novel is outlined with a one to two sentence summary of each chapter, you can then go about developing each individual chapter...just fill in the blanks. It may change slightly as you start chapter one, but the main point is to begin with the basics. What parts are absolutely necessary and essential to your novel? Complete these parts first. Then, as you reread each of these parts once the rough draft of your novel has been written, you will in all likelihood have many additional ideas and determine additional parts and scenes that will strengthen your novel. Knowing how to start a novel can begin by writing a short, novel summary like those that would appear on the back of the novel once it has been published. With this succinct, yet general few sentences or a paragraph, beginning novelists can act as a potential reader, whose mind will naturally begin to form questions about the summary. These questions -- who, what, when, where, how, why -- are applied to the little bit that is revealed with the summary on the back of the book. It is important that your novel answer all the main questions your readers will have. When you start a novel, first write these questions as they relate to the brief summary. How you answer these question will be the creative part of your novel. How and by which characters these answers are told is the creative part of your novel, which can be further developed once you have finished how to start a novel.

Education A Writers Secret To Writing Winning Fiction Novels

I have a few secret skills that I use to make my writing come alive. I believe that everyone has their own skills but I like to think I have a few secrets that few know about. I really can't believe I'm spreading my information like this, but maybe it will result in better material. One of my rules are I never write about things I know nothing about unless I've researched it. I like to use places that are exact and have their own description so I won't have to make up things. Hey we've got enough to think about making the story. Perhaps one of my greatest secrets to writing a great fiction novel is my descriptive tricks. Yes tricks, I'll have to demonstrate rather than just tell you. I use emotions and word association to show you what I want you to see. Here's an example: I won't write things like this. Tim's mother died and he cried while Sarah consoled him saying, "She's in a better place now." Tim cried harder as he heard the words and thought about how much his mother loved him. I'd write this instead. Tim's mother died in the peace of her sleep last night. Tim threw his head back and soaked his tears within his red shirt. Sarah tried to console him by sheltering him with her arms. "She's in a better place now," Sarah whimpered. Tim's heart heated with pain and his tears dripped over his wrist as he thought about how much his mother loved him. Do you see the difference in the same two examples. In the first one, there is a lot of telling and in the second fiction paragraph there is more showing. That's rule number two; don't tell what happened, show what happened and tell the story. Look at the word associations. Can you guess how many I used? I used more than three but I'll only discuss three. What do you think of when I say the word red? Most people think of the words stop, love, or blood to name a few. Now ask yourself what do these words have to do with the character or the scene? His shirt was used to give you a better picture and to guild your mind. Look at the word sheltering. What comes to mind? Is it homeless, refugees or some type of sad situation. It's a much different effect if I was to use the word housed instead. What about the word whimpered? This word is perfect because I describes how she said the remark. Also did you notice how I put her words before I said who said them. Keep in mind the fact that you are controlling the readers thoughts by saying certain words. Don't simply say Tim cried. Show Tim crying. If you want me to see the room, describe it to me first. If you want me to see the person describe that to me. You'll always win in fiction if you can make your readers feel emotions. When I read a novel and I feel like I want to cry afterwords, I say this is good. If I laugh, then it entertains me. Whatever emotion you can make your audience feel is great. You can win writing a great fiction novel, you'll just have to learn word association and be very descriptive.

Education Prepositions Are Little Words With Big Impact

This is my personal plea as a writer in support of the little words in our language -- prepositions. Don't leave them out, please. They may be little words, but they have a big impact on our intelligent use of the English language, both spoken and written. I just spent some time roaming around the Internet looking for discussions about prepositions, those little words in the English language (well, all languages use them in some form, really) that indicate relationships between words and phrases. I'll bet you know the words I mean: "at," "by," "of," "about," "from," "for," "with," etc. Most native English speakers have few problems understanding prepositions and preposition usage. Native speakers of the language begin to understand from an early age how different words relate to each other, so they quickly learn to pick the correct preposition to indicate those word or phrase relationships. But I recently ran onto several forums for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. If you look around such forums, you may be amazed at how difficult it is for non-native speakers of English to get preposition usage right. But, really, how much does it matter whether you're off just a little on the correct preposition. They're "little" words, mostly, so how much difference can the right or wrong preposition make? Let me give you a simple exercise to illustrate how important it can be to use the correct preposition in a phrase. Take the phrase "land for sale Branson" as an example. (I live near Branson, Missouri, that country music mecca which now vies with Nashville, Tennessee, as the cultural universe of country music. I recently saw this phrase used exactly as quoted in an online ad about Branson.) As you can see, some preposition is needed between "sale" and "Branson." Think about what prepositions might be used in the phrase. What would you use, and how much difference would your choice make to the meaning of the ad? Let's look at some examples of how using different prepositions would change the ad: "Land for sale IN Branson" -- Clearly, the land being sold is located in the city of Branson if you use this preposition. "Land for sale BY Branson" -- Maybe the land is in Branson; maybe it's not. It appears to be owned by the city of Branson and the city wants to sell it. Or -- does the "by" mean "along side, beside, near" Branson and refer simply to the location of the land? "Land for sale FROM Branson" -- This preposition is really ambiguous, isn't it? Does this mean the land is owned by someone who lives in Branson and wants to sell it, but the land itself is nowhere near Branson? It might. The lesson we learn from the Branson ad appears to be clear: Be careful to use prepositions when you need them, and please be careful to use the correct preposition when you use one. Oh, and if you're wondering, I never clicked on that ad so I have no idea which preposition usage is correct regarding that Branson land sale. As for any ESL students out there reading this -- good luck, my friends. English can be a tricky and mysterious language to learn. Even the seemingly little words like prepositions can have a big impact on meaning. But I'm sure you're learning that, aren't you? essay prices

Education Your Freelance Career - Stop Getting Duped In Freelance!

Every freelancer will have at least one story about being scammed out of their time and money. The amounts will be low and the reasons will be varied, but the fact will still remain - The scamster gets everyone. If you have not been taken by a scamster till now, either you are doing something right or you are still quite new to the freelance world. to ensure that you do not get duped in freelance, here are some tips: Decide the Sources: A freelancer can get freelance jobs from a varied number of places. It can be via networking, word of mouth, or even from the Internet. It is not that a person can get duped in freelance only on the Internet. They can be duped out of their money and resources even by their neighbors! Therefore, the freelancer should first decide the sources of their freelance work, and check whether they can get any worthwhile assignments from their chosen sources of freelance assignments. Be Inquisitive: If you have your freelance client via the Internet, you have every right to be inquisitive about the work that you are about to take up and how it will be used. Some freelance clients actually tell the freelancer what they are about to do with his or her services, while some are ambiguous. This does not mean to say that every client who is ambiguous is a scamster, but it helps a lot if the person shows a bit of inquisitiveness about the company and the employer - it helps the dupers stay away. Follow the Rules: One of the most important traits of a duper is that they will never follow the rules that are set up by the person or the organization through they they are interacting with the freelancer. if you get your work through the internet and the websites that help people get a freelancer, and if you receive an indication that the client would want to move the conversation to an IM without any such indication on the site, run away. These are three basic steps that you should keep in mind while working on a freelance basis. Remember that there is no insurance or security or confirmed pay at the end of the month in a freelance job and therefore every day and hour that you work counts.

Education Should Ghost Writers Specialize

Especially when first starting out, many writers lean towards wanting to be all things to all people. Like walking Walmarts, we think that offering the widest variety of services at the lowest possible prices is the fastest, surest way to get clients beating a path to our door. And while it's true that there are a lot of bargain hunters out there looking for pennies-on-the-dollar ghost written articles, ebooks and more, those of us who pursue (or want to pursue) ghost writing careers need to stop and think: what quality of life do we want to live, and what quality of writing do we want to offer? Do we really want to chase willy-nilly after every job post we see, like desperate lemmings in search of the latest food supply, or do we want to create professional reputations for ourselves and our writing? Specialization can help us keep the willy-nillyness to a minimum, while providing us with the potential to earn top dollar for our work. After all, specialists in any field have the advantage over generalists, in that they can usually claim greater expertise and guarantee a higher quality of work. The same holds true for ghost writers. What kinds of ways can ghost writers specialize? There are primarily three categories for specialization: By target client base. You can decide that you want to write solely for celebrities (or, even more specifically, for famous athletes, musicians, pop culture stars or politicians). You can build a ghost writing career around writing for CEOs, doctors, scientists, war veterans, world travelers, or people who have overcome great odds. For every profession, hobby or lifestyle, there are people out there who want to share their stories and experiences. By subject matter. Ghost writers come in many forms; some specialize in medical ghost writing, others in ghost writing about business. There are ghost writers with specialties in history, religion, politics, the environment and psychology. Others specialize in providing the voice for a specific culture or subculture. Again, even within a subject the stories are limitless and ever-changing. By writing specialty. Last but not least, you can specialize in the types of writing services you provide. You can stick solely to article writing, or writing autobiographies, or speechwriting; you can establish a reputation as a top how-to book, memoir or family history writer. Or you can tout your blogging ability or offer to ghost tweets on Twitter. Good, reliable writers are needed for all of these. If you really want to create a niche specialty, you can combine elements from the above categories-solely write memoirs for aging celebrities, for example, or articles for CEOs. The variety and availability of potential specialties are limited only by your own imagination, persistence and drive. It's better than the willy-nilly route any day. buy thesis

Education Develop Portfolio For Copywriting Services

Freelance copywriters can write technically and creatively, but they should work with their clients to combine their ideas into the realization of projects that suits the client's needs. Most copywriters build their own portfolio. It is a collection of their projects in the form of brochures or web content or other methods of conveying the skills of the copywriter. Even though you are just beginning in the copywriting industry, you can build your own portfolio to get your first project. You can also enlist in a copywriting course. Some of these physical or online course trainings, like the one in some universities such as NYU, give you homework that can be used for portfolio content. Although they are not for advertising, they will give your prospective clients a chance to examine how you develop ideas through writing. Make your own portfolio pieces. Imagine of a fictitious product or service to begin with. You can talk to an art director or graphic artist to transform your words into advertising. You may have to spend some money for the art service, but it's an investment. Look for a freelance job. You can find this in classified sections or agencies, particularly smaller projects. Since the budget for these projects are not as big as a permanent writer, they are sometime eager to accept freelance jobs who has minimal background but can do the job. When the contents are printed, you should have copies and include them in your portfolio. Purchase a professional-looking portfolio case. You can find one in a supply store or an art store. This will allow your portfolio to have an air of professionalism and elegance. Keep accepting smaller projects and update your portfolio. It should include only your successful projects, not everything you have worked on. You should remember to update it as you write new successful contents. You can also begin your personal website where you can post your portfolio. With a personal website that has an updated portfolio, your clients can examine your previous projects anytime, anywhere. You can also use your personal website to further your career and give background information on how the client can hire you for your services. If you really want to make a career in the freelance industry, then you should invest in a good website. Categorize your website so it is very easy to browse and be helpful to your clients. Clients do not want to click and click on items that they can read on the same page just to find what they are looking for. If you don't have the skills in building an attractive website, you can hire the services of a graphic artist and a website developer to make your website professional as possible. A personal website is better than bidding with numerous freelance writers on a forum or a free site. As a writer, you need to check your grammar and punctuation. A portfolio with many grammatical errors is a turn off. If that is your idea of good grammar, what is your idea of a good product? Only clients with no grasp of grammar themselves are going to hire a freelance writer who cannot even spell properly. Check and re-check everything you write before you post it in your portfolio. If you find an error in one of your samples that you have already posted, delete it or at least make a remedy before you post it again. article submission sites

Education Write A How-To Book - 7 Questions To Ask About Your Titles

Your title is the most important sentence of your book. Without a great title, your potential reader will never pick up your book, will never read the first sentence and will never be hooked into reading the book. When you write your how-to book you need to take a great deal of care with the title. A great title must compel the reader to pick up the book and read the front copy. That motivation begins the process of buying the book. But how do you ensure that your title is as good as the how-to book you're writing? Here are seven questions to ask yourself when writing the title to your how-to book: 1. Does the title clearly identify a pain point the reader will want to avoid? If you speak to a copywriter you will find that we are all motivated by one of three things. The first of these is the strongest motivator and that is pain. We all want to avoid pain. It may seem negative -- and it is -- but it's also a fact of life. So if your title includes a pain point for the reader it will gain the reader's attention. 2. Does the title clearly identify a pleasure point the reader is seeking? This is the opposite of the previous question. The positive version if you prefer. Unfortunately, avoiding pain is a much better motivator than seeking pleasure. We're far more likely to be willing to work to avoid pain than we are to work to achieve pleasure. 3. Does the title clearly identify a fear that the reader has? This is the third alternative to motivate the reader. Appeal to their emotions. However, like the pain/pleasure duality, motivation is much stronger with the negative emotions. Once we have answered this question we will know if the title is weak. Why? In order to be strong, a title must appeal to either the desire to receive pleasure, the desire to avoid pain or to a base emotion. Unless it does, the title will never be strong no matter how we answer the remaining questions. 4. Does the title make a clear, strong promise? It isn't enough to just state the pain or pleasure or emotion the reader seeks or wishes to avoid. The reader wants a solution. In order to be the strongest it can be, the title to your how-to book must promise a solution. 5. Does the title appeal to the reader's emotions? This is very similar to the base emotions question. However, in this case the appeal is less basic. Whereas the title should be very focused in avoiding a fear or base emotion, this question is more focused on the result and what emotional state will be gained by reading the book. 6. Does the title motivate the reader? In many ways, this is a trick question because if all the rest of the questions are yes then the reader will be motivated. But in any case, the whole point of a title is to motivate the reader to buy your book. Why? Because you have the solution they are looking for within the book. All they need is to be motivated to buy the book. 7. Is the promise in the title realistic? Have you seen books with titles like "Earn $1 Million Dollars Working Only 2 Hours A Day"? Of course you have. Did you believe their promise? Neither did anyone else. Earlier we stated that you need to have a clear, strong promise. This is the other side of that question. It's important to have a clear, strong promise in the title -- but when you write your how-to book, you need to ensure that the promise is kept. Otherwise your reader will feel cheated. And they won't buy a second or third book from you. thesis writing

Education Resolutions For Writers

Most writers will make resolutions at the start of each year and promptly fail to keep most of them. Nothing new in that. It happens to the best of us. For 2010 however, I'm determined to start off small and remain focused. As a writer, some great resolutions to make include: 1. Write everyday. Even if it's a single paragraph, find the time to write it. There's nothing quite like putting pen to paper (or hands to the keyboard) to inspire fresh output and get the creative juices flowing. 2. Learn a new word each day. Keep a dictionary on your desk and start at the alphabet A and work your way through it. Or pick random words as you go along. Either way, by the end of the year, you'll have 365 new words to include in your own writings. 3. Read everyday. It could be the newspapers or fliers pushed through your mailbox. By making a conscious effort to read, you are automatically learning something new or refreshing an old memory. 4. Increase your attempt to work on crossword puzzles or mind challenging games. They serve to tone your mind and keep your thoughts agile. 5. Re-evaluate your writing goals. And make the appropriate changes as needed. Do this at least once every two months. 6. Keep promoting yourself. Print up some business cards, join a networking association, volunteer at your local community centre. Find methods which you are comfortable using and then use them. 7. Take a course. Depending on what you can afford, sign up for a course on writing. If you can't afford to pay university fees, there are always online learning options. Invest as much as you can in courses throughout the year. 8. Overcome writers block. If you face writers block, you know how paralysing this can be. Find out what's causing it and then take actions to overcome it. 9. complete unfinished projects. Devote a couple of weeks, days or even just hours to completing any unfinished projects you may have laying about in your desk. Dust off old work and give it a new take. 10. Try something new. If you've never written an article for a magazine, make 2010 your year to try your hand at article writing. If you shy away from writing press releases, give it a shot. You may need to take courses to brush up any old knowledge you've had (or learn from scratch), but it'll be well worth your time and effort when you have a new genre to add to your writing skills. buy research paper

Education The Big English Present

The grammatical term of the present in English is a bit of trap. Yes it is a tense, but when combined with the four basic aspects of simple, progressive (or continuous), perfect and perfect progressive the concept of the present being the now type present goes out the window. The confusion starts with the present simple. It is big. Really big. So big in fact that it swallows up the past and future and sticks them together. For example. I am a man. Could I have been a woman last year? Or will I change into a woman in five years? No, it says I was a man, am a man, and will continue to be a man. Past, present and future. To move aspects. I am reading a book. So, what right at this very moment? No. Perhaps I started reading the book three weeks ago, and still have ten chapters left to read. Perhaps I only read one chapter of an evening before going to bed. Again, past, present and future. Or, I am having my tooth extracted. When. Today, tomorrow, next week. We don't know, but it is definitely in the future. To the perfect present. I have painted the kitchen. When exactly? Am I painting now? No, I finished some time ago. So here we have the present talking about the past. That's logical isn't it? The economy has collapsed. When? Now, or in the past? I have been painting the kitchen. Add the progressive to the perfect and what do we have now? Past action again, but now there is a hint that I may not have completed it yet. Now there is a subtle difference to ponder. So there we have it. The grammatical present in English. Quite a simple concept really. It is everything, every time and quite illogically huge. To understand why the English present is different from many other languages, one needs to look at how English uses time in its tenses. Yes, as in most languages English has the three standard grammatical time periods of past, present and future. Where English differs, is that it needs another time period, and that is the time concept of now. Now is infinitely small. It is gone before you know it has been. It is the very fine line of time that separates the past from the future. The present sits on top of this structure, and with a change of aspect, moves to the appropriate point in time. Hence, the present in English is not just the present at all. It can be the past, the present or the future. Or, a combination. Simple really. submitting article

Education Plots For Fiction And Fantasy Novels - Figaro! Figaro!

The most difficult part of sitting down to write that next piece of literary immortality is constructing your plot, or so it seems at the time. To have that sensation of "immortality" over one's own work is not misguided, for to us our characters and settings are entirely original, one of a kind. However, it is unlikely that our plots are brand new, and that's just fine. Ecclesiastes may have been right... "there is nothing new under the sun." To have concretized the distant plot, far ahead of today's chapter-in-progress, is not necessary. The spontaneity of improvisation is a wonderful quality in fiction writing. However, models already exist for almost everything we would have our characters undergo, and a mix of improvisation and structure is a good approach. For that reason, I would avoid soap operas, despite their "out there" qualities, for there is no ending place for the improvisation, and they are intended to spin on for years. Modern television fiction is fine, but must be translated into your era and setting of choice, which is easier to do from the work of earlier centuries. Laugh if you like, but the genre of opera has it all. Survey the "Opera Seria" of Handel, (kings, queens, epic heroes and exotic far-away loves) through Mozart's "Opera buffa" (comic opera), Singspiel (with spoken dialogue) and "Dramma giocoso" (dark comedy) on to the "Verismo" (reality) operas of Verdi and Puccini. You will find a set of entirely crystallized, pre-packaged plots that have stood the test of time and critics, and which can be superimposed on any era or cultural setting. Study Wagner's "Music Dramas" and you'll even have the ancient Nordic market wrapped up without lifting a finger, all pre-Tolkien. "Wozzeck" and "Lulu" of Alban Berg will provide that touch of post-industrial revolution horror genre in which so many modern authors revel. Since these works are between eighty and two hundred plus years old, the need for ongoing revision ended long ago. The plots pace themselves beautifully, as a rule, treat characters with the ratio of importance they deserve, avoid editor alerts for conflicting logistics and deliver ironic finales of the first order. The spacing with which characters enter and exit, for purposes of vocal rest, parallels perfectly the literary need to make sure characters are seen and unseen for effective durations. And so...the next time you find yourself sitting in a corner with a cold cup of coffee, laboring for a story with which to kick-start your work, get up and see what your nearby opera company is up to this season. Even in another language at half the speed of speaking, you won't be able to miss it. There's a powerful story in it, or it wouldn't be there - "La commedia e stupenda!" G.F. Skipworth has toured much of the world as a concert pianist, vocalist, composer, symphonic/operatic conductor and opera coach, but has also worked as a speech, pamphlet, comedy and academic writer. In a diverse output, he has published four volumes of "Fables of the Carpailtin Campfire," which include "Shindaheen," "Fire And Iceland," "Three Roads To Waitsburg" and "Airna of Karapin."

Education How Can I Find Freelance Writing Jobs?

If you have been doing some research online on how to find freelance writing jobs, you may be a bit confused. It is difficult to tell which offers are real and which are shady and should be avoided. But rest assured that mixed in with all the too-good-to-be-true offers, there are some gems waiting for you out there. So the good news is there are many freelance jobs available for writers, and it's just a matter of weeding through all the mud to get to the gold. And anything worth having is worth a little effort, so let's go over what to look for and what to avoid. If you see an offer that has a picture of someone working in their night clothes, feet propped up on the computer, snoring away with a cup of coffee nearby and money flying out of the computer in all directions, this might be something to avoid. I'm not saying it is absolutely bad news because there are a few legitimate offers where they use outlandish graphics like that to get your attention. However, look at what they are promising you. Are they saying you can take on this job and make money while snoozing the day away? This is probably not something to pursue. Look instead at sites like Elance and the like as a starting point in your search for freelance writing work. Sites like this allow you to bid on jobs, and the more jobs you do, the more feedback you get, and the higher prices you can command for your work. Lots of people make quite a lovely living just hiring out for freelance writing gigs just like this. It's important to keep doing more and more jobs though so that you can build up your reputation. Most of the time that is how you can make the most money. If you'd rather just look for a specific job you can check Craigslist and see what type of jobs people are needing done. You can also place an ad yourself. Of course you can go the traditional route and simply apply to magazines and newspapers for freelance work, and you can certainly make money writing this way. But in this day and time it is much easier to write for websites online. There is lots of money to be made that way as the Internet is made up of content and information, and that isn't going to change anytime soon. buy a new essay

Education Writer's Block - 5 More Ways To Deal With It

Work on your mental attitude Do you believe in writer's block? Or is it a convenient reason for not starting something. The lesson of the red shirts shows us that when we tune our antennae to what we want to see, then we see it. If you haven't tried the red shirt exercise, as you go around today, tune into red shirts and see how many you notice. Because you're now looking for them I predict you'll see them by the dozen. Now apply the same exercise to looking for ideas. Go where people are and look for the stories you can tell from their faces. Listen to what they say. People have an individual ways of using language. A phrase picked up can be enough to spark your imagination. Ask other people for help Writing is a solitary occupation. Usually. So why do successful comedy shows and long running soaps have teams of writers? Because they need the sparks to fly and ideas to be stimulated. If your ideas feel stale and you can't get going, find someone to bounce ideas off. I'm lucky enough to have a fellow writer who prods me and shakes me up. Find a writing buddy but make sure you can trust them. Do a workshop I don't mean a writing workshop. That might make you feel more anxious. Do a practical workshop. Doesn't matter how bad you are at it. You're there to activate different parts of your brain than what you use for writing. I'm a self confessed craft failure. But from time to time I try something different. Part of me things I'll discover the one craft that works for me. but it's more that it gives me a different challenge and creates new connections and pathways in the brain. Sing Naw I'm tone deaf you say? Singing is a universal language. Even if you haven't sung in any way for yourself, and there are few people who don't admit to singing in the shower, just opening your mouth and letting out your sound is therapeutic. If you really hate the thought of singing, then find somewhere away from people. Then simply open your mouth and let out your sound. It may feel strange to you but there is a unique sound inside you waiting to come out. We talk about finding our voice as writers. Singing or sounding may help you to do that. Use your senses How real is your writing to you? Is it words on a page or a film going on in your head? Putting your body - your flesh and bones body into your writing creates a living breathing experience. Have you ever tried to act out your writing? Being each character in turn gives you access to that character at a deeper level. Therapeutic sessions featuring your characters or the reader you're targeting can bring out the emotions on a visceral level where you feel their pain or joy. It's interesting to try. Writing back stories for the readers you want to sell to creates a much more targeted text and hones your story telling skills. writing job onlne

Education What You Didn't Expect to Learn in Web Design School

When you think of the topics covered in web design school, the typical ones that would pop into mind are courses on Flash or Colour Theory, just to name a few. But what about courses on marketing and Microsoft Word? Do these subjects belong in a classroom filled with aspiring web designers? In short, the answer is yes. In fact, a web designer needs to know much more than things that directly relate to design. Like any other expert, a web designer must be able to grasp the core topics as well as those that hover in the less mentioned but very important periphery. Here are just some of the topics web design students can expect to study, despite what intuition tells them. Microsoft Word Wait a second, isn't Word the writer's sanctuary? Understandably, Microsoft Word seems to be the antithesis of web design. But like any specialization, it is important to be skilled in all applicable areas and programs. Truthfully, a web designer shouldn't stop at Word. They should also master the multiple layers of all Office programs, like Excel and Power Point. With the anticipation of drafting coding, presentations, and compiling tables, knowing how to use Office applications is a key skill that web designers will need to have. Marketing and Sales How is Marketing included as an official web design course? There are two principal reasons why understanding the complexities of marketing and sales will propel your career as a web designer. Firstly, and most obviously, there will likely come a time when you need to pitch your work to a client or prospective employer, in which case you will need to impress them not only by your work, but your ability to present your work in a way that it stands out from all the rest. Secondly, your marketing skills will allow you to gain a better grasp the web design industry as a whole. From this, you will be able to identify emerging trends, and thus design according to whether you want to run parallel or perpendicular to the mainstream.

Job Search and Resume Writing As nice as it may sound, going to web design school will not actually land you a great web design job. Also, while it is absolutely vital that you develop and master your design skills, your talent will not actually get you where you want to go all by itself. The key to gaining access into your desired pathways is knowing where to look. Do you want to work as freelance designer? Do you want to be an in-house wed designer in a large corporation? Or do you want to design remotely, working with client and companies from all around the world? It is very important that you learn how to search for career opportunities that you actually want, rather than any job that involves web design. A course on job searching and resume writing will do exactly that, and will also guide you on key elements of presentation, cover letters and professional correspondence.

Education Journaling - Begin Again

Why Journal? With all the information and articles available on how to journal maybe we should begin with why we may not be journaling. What stops us many times from even beginning to journal is fear. We may fear that someone will read our personal thoughts; we may fear that we will be critiqued; we may have heard someone say we are not smart enough to understand anything complicated therefore, we feel we cannot think. Someone may have said you have many abilities but writing is not one of them. Another somebody may have suggested that you just do not have a way with words. Whatever the reason we may be dealing with, it is easy to grab hold of these statements. We then believe them and allow them to stay in our hearts and minds. This can paralyze us from starting to journal. What exactly is journaling? Journaling is a personal record of occurrences, experiences, and reflections kept on a regular basis, a diary of sorts. The point of journaling is to write down your history, your own story, as it is happening. So when we do not journal our story, our history, is not recorded. As soon as I wrote the last sentence, I heard hundreds of voices saying, "but my story is boring. My history is not interesting." Wrong! Margaret Smith writes in her book Journal Keeper that "nothing is too ordinary to write about. The word ordinary comes from the word order. When you write in your journal about the ordinary, you are making order out of a jumble of thoughts. Soon you will notice a pattern developing. Events and thoughts that may have seemed random or mundane begin to piece themselves together in a mosaic pattern. The shape of your life becomes easier to see when it's set down on paper." What's your story? Those of us, who have thought our lives shapeless and void of design and purpose, have just not written our "living" down to see the pattern that is developing. But in 2010 we can begin to write our history and story. Begin again. Here is a jump start for the New Year. Billy Joel, a songwriter, wrote the following: "In every heart there is a room, a sanctuary safe from storm." Take your new journal and open up to the first crisp blank page. Write the above song lyric on the first line and then write what affected you today. What affected you by either making you happy or that made you upset or confused. When you are finished, whether you've written one sentence or one hundred, record the date at the top and close the book. Tomorrow there will be more to write. Your history is now being recorded. Your personal time line is now being drawn and soon you will begin to see that you can shape and mold the pattern of your life by what you do daily. And the journaling begins. thesis writing service

Education Five Questions to Ask When Hiring a Tutor

A tutor is something that many parents may want for their aspiring child. As parents, we need to know I we can entrust our children with these strangers on a weekly basis. Because our children are so precious to us, we can never know too much about the people who we have working with them on a weekly basis. These are our experts' thoughts about you should know about a tutor before hiring them to work with your child. The experts say we should know these five things about a tutor: 1. Can you teach? Knowing the academic subject isn't enough. Many people may know algebra, literature or biology, but can they teach it to a child? Is your tutor a match for your child's unique learning style? Teachers go through extensive education and training in order to become certified and improper teaching methods can actually hinder a student's ability to learn. Inconsistencies can easily cause more harm than good, confusing a child and creating a lack of confidence in the classroom. 2. Can I run a background check? Your child's safety is of the utmost importance, and is a priority when finding a tutor. Bringing a person into your home can be a scary decision. Dropping your child off at their home can be even more so. You may know your child's tutor, but how well do you really know them and their history? Running a background check keeps your child safe from possible predators. 3. Do you know the material? Lesson plans, subject matter and materials have evolved. Schools are different today than the way they were when we were growing up. Teaching methods are more collaborative and project-based. If your tutor does not understand what is being taught, or is behind the curve, then they will teach your child incorrectly. 4. Can you commit your time to my child? Tutoring is not a one to two week commitment, but rather a growing relationship over a much longer period of time. It should focus on many subjects, concepts and reinforce a child's study skills. Your child will benefit from consistency, and a lack of commitment can cause way too much anxiety for parents and child alike. 5. Can you keep up? Your child's needs may change over time. Sometimes, just when a problem in math is fixed, a new issue with vocabulary may spring up. One person may not know everything your child is studying at an expert level. Unless a tutor is well versed in a variety of subjects, your child may only benefit in a single area, whilst the parents are paying for more. If your child's needs change, you need to be able to trust a consistent tutor for everything your child may need in the future. Education How To Pick A Topic For Your Next Book

Not too long ago I got an email from someone who was wondering how to pick a topic for their next book. They were comfortable writing. There were a lot of possible topics they could choose. They weren't sure, however, that they knew enough to write a worthwhile book about any of the topics that interested them. Their problem was actually simple. They just didn't know how to pick the topic! In this article I'm going to give you an eight step technique to pick a topic for your next book. First of all, it doesn't matter that you don't know enough about any particular topic... what matters is that you know more than your audience. So put that idea away. Yes, how much you know does matter. But we'll address that later. So how do you pick a topic for your next book? 1. Grab yourself a sheet of paper. Put six columns on it. "Topic/Subject","I enjoy it", "I know a lot", "I'm good at it", "I want to learn more", and "Other people need it". 2. Now, under the Topic/Subject column start listing anything and everything that you know about. Hobbies, what you do for a living, skills, survival tactics. All of them are great sources of ideas. 3. When you finish your ideas, go to Amazon and look at their topics. Are there any there that you know about? If so add that to the list. 4. When you finish you list, take and put a check mark in the columns where the answer is yes. So for example if you have a topic of "Chicken Plucking" and you're the best dang chicken plucker in the state then you'll put a tick mark beside "Chicken Plucking" in the "I'm good at it" column. On the other hand the "Other people need it" column will probably be left blank. 5. If you answered yes to all the questions then that's a great candidate. If you missed only the "I know a lot" column... that's still a great candidate. 6. Now take your list and a separate sheet of paper for each of the great candidates. 7. Make a circle with the topic in the centre. Draw ten lines going out from the circle. At the end of each draw another circle. 8. Now, write in these circles something associated with the first circle. For example, if the topic subject was learning content, you might write designing, editing, writing, publishing, presenting, and so on. If the topic subject was motivation, you might write how, what, your own, customers, workers, and effective techniques, ineffective techniques and so on. If you can do that you know enough to write a book on the subject. The only questions left to be answered are "Who would want to read such a book?", "Why would they want to read that book?" and "Are there enough people who want to read such a book to make it a viable market?" how to buy an essay

Education Guidelines To Writing A Consumer Review

The modern human lifestyle is highly materialistic in nature. This has generated an intense competition between the manufacturers who sell consumer goods. To grab business in such circumstances, every producer leaves no stones unturned to make a good impression of their products upon you. As a result it becomes difficult sometime to figure out which product to buy. This has made existence of consumer review websites very important. They contain critique by consumers who have lately used the product. These reviews help the would-be buyers to make informed decisions. Today as most buyers depend upon these reviews to settle upon a particular brand for a product, it is crucial to write truthful, comprehensive and efficient product reviews rather than the cursory ones that state almost nothing. Here are a few handy tips about how to write good consumer review. The first and the obvious requisite to write an informative consumer review is to be a user of the product yourself. Use the product to have an opinion from the first hand experience. Don't depend on second hand stories; they are unreliable most of the time. Moreover, it is unethical to make a comment or criticize a product, that you have not experienced yourself. After having written the consumer review, find out relevant and popular forums to post it. If you post in sites that are not reputed enough or are known for false reviews, then you review stands a slim chance of being read. Many product manufacturers have websites that contain false reviews to impress customers about their product. Keep such forums at an arm's length. In your review state the name of the product, company, brand name very clearly. Don't confuse reader about which product you are talking of nor send him to hunt other sources to find out the exact product you have mentioned in your review. The identification of the product should be done within the first sentence or two. Don't copy and rephrase any other review that is already in the website. Use the product and form an opinion about it. And give it a voice. For if you copy, all the reviews will look the same. This will bring down the credibility of the evaluations. This will confuse readers and they will not trust or read the reviews anymore. Sometimes it may happen so after using a particular product, you may like it. But at the same time some shortcomings may come to your notice as well. List both negative and positive sides. Such evaluations help the buyers to take a balanced decision. Never write fake reviews on behalf of companies, who might pay you for writing them. Read and re-read what you have written in the consumer review. The writing should make sense. The reader should be able to understand the point that you have tried to thrust. Otherwise, the purpose is failed. Check grammar spelling and punctuation, as the write-up will be posted in a public forum. Such errors will bring down the credibility of the review

Education How To Keep Visitors On Your Website

You've got your website - it looks amazing and you're ready to go. But have you read the content? Have you analysed your site from a customer's point of view? It's the content and not the look that will keep visitors on your website - and visitors turn into customers. No amount of style will make up for substance on the net anymore. People want clear, clean, quality information that helps them quickly and easily. They also need to be able to trust you and know that you deliver a reliable, quality service or product. And you have 5-10 seconds to do it! Visitors land on your site and they will give you about 8 seconds then they'll decide to leave or stay. So your written content has to be the best you can possibly make it. Here are some tips to help you improve your website content so that your visitors stay around and decide to do business with you. o Don't write a word of content before you know who you're writing for. And remember you are not writing for you. Too many websites still go on about 'We do this and we do that...' Your website visitor is not interested in you - only in what you can do for them. o Study your customer group - What age are they? More males or females? What education level? What type of job do they do? Why do they need your service? Where do they live or work? o Each of the above affects the way you write. If you know the average education level of your website visitor you'll know what level to pitch your writing at so they relate to it. o Why do people visit your website? Do they want information? Prices? Products? Examples of your work? Reviews? What exactly are they looking for? What is the purpose of your site? That must be clear to your visitor on the home page. If it's not, they'll leave. o What questions are your visitors likely to have? Come up with their likely questions then answer them on your site. o What problems do your visitors have? Tell them on your website how you can solve these problems in the best way possible. o Be crystal clear about what you want your website visitor to do. Sign up for your newsletter so that you can build a relationship? Download a free report? Buy immediately? Read information and bookmark your site as a resource? Contact you? o Know what you want your website visitor to do and tell them how to do it and make it easy for them. How many times have you been on a site and left because you couldn't contact the people easily or couldn't find out how to buy the product? These things aren't difficult to do but they're easy to overlook or forget in the rush to have a live website that looks fantastic. Only websites that are visitor-friendly and informative will succeed. The reality is, on the internet, style over substance just doesn't work. Your website visitor wants well-written, clear information on an easy-to-use site that makes them feel welcome and cared about. purchase term paper

Education Why Do You Need An Editor

So, you have a manuscript of your soon-to-be-best seller. Or you have those articles that you want to publish so you can increase your traffic and sales at your website. You think they are perfect and you publish them on the web. All of a sudden, you are getting phone calls and emails from your friends and family letting you know that you misspelled this word here and had an incomplete sentence there. More embarrassingly, they tell you that the book (articles) just didn't make sense; that they didn't have any continuity from once chapter to the next. How could you have avoided these issues before going public with your work? You could have taken steps to correctly edit your work first and then you could have had your wonderful work reviewed by an editor. You can not be a successful author without some sort of editing. All writers should get their work edited prior to any form of publishing. Why? Because it can save you from some embarrassing phone calls or emails like above. But maybe more importantly, it is a reflection on you and your business. For example, if you are writing something for your business, it should reflect the quality of your services. If it is sloppy writing, then your potential customer may not want to read further and you may have lost a client when simple editing could have saved the day. Why risk losing a customer because you didn't take the time to edit and revise your work? It is just not worth it. How many times have you read something that you wrote and failed to pick up the spelling error (for example, there for their)? Yet, the minute fresh eyes see the same writing, they immediately see what you glossed over every time. After all, you slaved over this manuscript for days (weeks, months). It has to be right. But our brains see what they want to see and so we see that word spelled correctly. Someone else who reads your work for the first time does not have your vested interest in the manuscript, so they can see what your brain has been overlooking. Basically, you need to edit and revise your work prior to sending it to an editor. Then you need to send it to a professional editor. Even if you feel that you have done a great job, fresh eyes can pick up little items that you may have missed and more importantly, make suggestions as to flow and content. Remember, you are writing about something you know. Concepts that you take for granted may not always be clear to your reader. Getting someone else to read it from a flow and content standpoint, not just spelling and grammar, is not only a great help, but a necessary basic tenet to becoming a great writer. In future articles, I will give you helpful hints to guide you in editing your own work prior to sending it out for professional editing help. I will also discuss the different types of editing and why you may want to look for several editors for your work.

Education How To Deal With Writers Block

One of the hardest things for creative people to deal with is the concept of writers block. This is essentially where you are stuck for new ideas and can't figure out where to start. I have come up with a few ideas to help combat this problem. Get away from your keyboard. I have always found my best ideas come to me when I am not working or trying to work. So go outside and take a walk or play with your kids, pets, toys or even watch some television. Anything that takes your mind away from the task at hand will sometimes allow things to flow better. As soon as a good idea strikes take a walk back to your keyboard and start writing. Get some exercise. One of the best things you can do to get your creative juices flowing is exercise. Exercise stimulates blood flow and the brain. Sometimes all it takes is 20 minutes on the treadmill or out jogging to put you into the writer's mindset. Consume a little sugar and or coffee. This is a trick I used to use for brainstorming sessions in my office. I would always make sure there was a bowl of jelly beans available in our boardroom. Also I tried to make coffee runs before important meetings. Sugar and caffeine are well known stimulants for brain activity. I'm not suggesting that you become an addict in any way, in fact consuming sugar regularly will eventually slow you down. Once in a while however a little sugar boost might be all you need to help you come up with ideas. Ask a friend for help. I usually use this as a last resort. The other day I was struggling for a good topic for my blog, so I sent instant messages out to a few of my friends and colleagues. Instantly I got replies from people with a number of good ideas. The great thing about this exercise was that the people who responded, did so with ideas that were customized to me. One of the ideas came from a student of mine who suggested I talk about a subject that is near and dear to him because I taught him this lesson. It was a subject that I knew a great deal about and had never produced any content surrounding it. I instantly got ignited and started working. It's never difficult for someone who is creative to talk or write about what they know. Sometimes all we need is the right subject matter to discuss. Look outside your box of reference whenever in need.

Education Writers And Readers - Both Are Playing Games

What I want to outline here is the dichotomy between writing and reading. There are actually four personages involved in this scheme. Two of them are real, and two are fictitious (but still played by real people). A text is written by an actual person. Let's call this person the Actual Writer. A text is read by an actual person. Let's call this person the Actual Reader. These two are real people. The writer is alive when writing the text (though by the time readers read it, he/she may be dead), and so is the reader. The reader is always alive when actually reading. If the relationship between the writer and the reader is like a conversation that takes place between them, then the writer is speaking and the reader is listening. Yes, but how can a writer who is dead be speaking? Here is where we have to introduce the two personages that are not real in this scheme. So, in the act of writing, the writer creates or produces a version of him/herself, and this version does not exist outside of the text. This version is in the text, and in the text only. And this happens with every act of writing. Even in the act that I am performing here by writing this article. There is a name for this person -- or, rather, persona -- the Implied Writer. But the same goes for the act of reading. There is always already a reader planted in every text. Let's call this persona the Implied Reader (this phrase comes from the English translation of Wolfgang Iser's Der implizite Leser published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 1974). The role the Actual Writer creates in the act of writing, which is the Implied Writer, should be fairly obvious. But that of the Implied Reader may be a bit more difficult to grasp. In what sense do I, as Actual Reader, play a role called the Implied Reader? The scheme is easy to see whenever a narrator (or Implied Writer) addresses the reader directly. Such "dear reader" passages exist in many novels, especially in the 18th century. But more recent metafiction, like that written by John Barth, for example, is notorious for addressing the reader directly. But who is this "reader"? Is it I, the Actual Reader? Or is it an imaginary/imagined reader who is supposed to play along with the Implied Writer? When Mark Twain's Huck Finn begins his "autobiography" by immediately addressing his reader as "you" (which is the first word of the novel), the reader is instantly put on alert for the role he/she needs to play, because Huck Finn is talking about an earlier book in which he has appeared, and which his current reader may be familiar with. But even if not, Huck goes on to talk about that book for a bit to get the reader to see who he is, and how the reader is to take what he is talking about. When the Actual Reader plays along with this "role" called upon him or her, he/she is assuming the role of the Implied Reader. And he/she is probably aware of the fact that the character of Huck is really an intermediary between Mark Twain and him/herself as the Actual Reader. So this is what the whole scheme looks like: The Actual Writer [The Implied Writer] -- [The Implied Reader] The Actual Reader This scheme is always already present in every text written/read. Even if a person is writing a personal letter to a friend, the person "present" in the text is a role played by the letter writer. This "wordy" self is always already the Implied Writer. And the friend reading the letter will also be an Implied Reader as he or she goes about the business of seeing what his or her friend is up to. This is how understanding takes place. It is only when the reader cooperates with the writer that a true meeting of minds can take place. And it is this true meeting of minds between writers and readers that both writing and reading are all about.
