Taking a general English course in London when you arrive is a tried and tested way of preparing yourself fully for your time studying in the UK. It gives you confidence, boosts your language skills naturally and serves as a fantastic practice session for the real thing. Even if you speak English very well, it can never hurt to take some time to refresh your skills and make sure you're fully on your game. On the other hand, if you English level is very basic, it can prove vital! All university and college courses in England are taught exclusively in English, so you need to make sure you can keep up with what is said in lectures, understand instructions for homework, exams and class work, as well as of course being able to socialise with you class- and housemates. Where do these courses take place? London is a huge city and, as a result, has hundreds of English language schools and teachers who provide great instruction. A starting point is to check with your future institution whether or not they offer English courses to their incoming international students. Most universities do, and information about this should be included in your welcome pack. If your university or college doesn't provide these courses however, there are still lots of great courses you can take around the city. Most have a minimum course duration of one week, but for most incoming international students this is the perfect amount of time to get up to speed and be speaking English to a much better level!
