Education Touring The Canadian Shield

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

For all guests of Sault Ste. Marie that were considering what to do with all the illustrious nature surrounding yourselves, you might want to consider traveling through The Canadian Shield for a countryside adventure filled with exotic wildlife and flora.

The Canadian Shield is the Earth's oldest mountain range and is composed of the largest exposed Precambrian rock formations of all time. Withered away by countless ice ages, this mountain range originally held the title of highest elevated mountains of North America until it was surpassed by the Rockies millions of years later. Today, the surface of the Canadian Shield consists of ice-smoothed hills with an average elevation of 30 meters high and is host to an array of wildlife and an extensive ecosystem. It is because of all this extensive history that the Canadian Shield has unsurprisingly received large amounts of attention from historians, activists and tourists alike. Since 1952 over 3 million people have taken a tour of the Agawa Canyon, a large area within the Canadian Shield most of which having done so though the Algoma Central Railway. The Algoma Central Railway Company in Sault Sainte Marie bridges the gap between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The company is operational all year long and it is because of this that they are able to offer a variety of different train tours that visit a majority of the Canadian Shield. Each of these packages is centralized around a seasonal theme, with most of the journey's extending for approximately 2-3 days and nights with an average cost of around 400 dollars. The tours come with a GPS triggered tour guide that narrates in over five different languages. Guests are provided with flat screen monitors and locomotive mounted digital cameras to enhance their experience. Tours must be booked in advanced and there a specific dates throughout the seasons that the train tours run. For availability purposes, it is prudent to make accommodations in advance. Once you've completed your guided train ride through the mountains, there are a widespread number of outdoor activities to engage in while visiting Sault Sainte Marie. Given the large mountain ranges, skiing and hiking programs do alternate with summer and winter. Sault Ste. Marie is located right on the lower cusp of Lake Superior, so there are numerous water-based activities to participate in as well. Kayaking, golf and day spa packages are available through the Sault Ste. Marie website. If you're coming in from out of town you might want to consider quarters close by the Algoma Central Railway.
