Education Avoiding Writer's Block With Four Easy Steps

Saturday, August 18, 2012

You faced writer's block and fortunately you overcame it for the time being. But what if it strikes you again? Chances are that it will. And what if at that time none of your time tested remedies work? Then what? Here's a list of four sure shot ways to keep the writer's block at bay. 1 Trust your imagination Set free your imagination horses and see where it leads you. Let it run wild, don't stop or interrupt it with logic. There is no logic with imagination. It's born to be free, so set it free, and trust it with all your heart. If you want you can guide it where you want it to go. And take it to the place where you have always dreamt to go but could not for whatever reasons. Now mount off the horse and sit quietly and observe where you are. What is the place? Is it an island or a hill station or just a beach resort or jungle? What is it? What time of the day is it and what are you doing? If it is an island is there a habitation there? Explore the island and write your exploration. Note everything you see, feel, and imagine. And you will be surprised to find that you will never face the writer's block again. 2. Dispel your fear and write The most common reason why you face writer's block is fear or anxiety. Fear that what you write will not be good. Dispel that fear by confronting and continue writing. Don't worry about what you are writing. Don't stop to read what you have written just keep writing. And don't get scared by the words or the feelings they inspire in you. If they are moving they will move the readers as well. Feel the emotion with your words. And do permit yourself to write badly at first. Then close it and do something else. Come back to it later and you will find words flowing on its own and soon you will be improvising your writing. 3. Read Reading plays a crucial role in eliminating a writer's block as it feeds the hungry minds. Read whatever you can lay your hands on. Make a reading a daily habit and you will find you are always filled with ideas. Reading can help both fiction as well as non fiction writers. For fiction writers or storytellers you can take a cue for a scene or a background to form your story, for non fiction writers with little research you can write about the humane side of the story all with the help of reading. 4. Travel to faraway places Everybody loves travelling but the schedules, family responsibilities do not let you travel. So then what do you do? Let your mind do the travelling to the faraway destinations where you have always wanted to go. In other words meditate. Yes meditation - lie down or sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and free your mind of daily tensions, stress and see where it leads you. You will be surprised by the direction it takes. Practice the above mentioned exercises daily and you can avoid your writer's block most of the time. And if you still find that you are facing the writer's block then learn how to take advantage of it.
