Education Writer's Block - Understand It To Avoid It

Monday, August 13, 2012

I had thought, perhaps, to be funny and begin this article on the subject of writer's block with a statement that sort of trailed off into.... Yep. You guessed it. Nothing. After all, that's what happens when you hit that brick wall known to all word-crafters as writer's block. It's as if you forgot why you were writing, not just what. The results of writer's block can be short-term and easily gotten over, resulting in nothing more than a little extra hurrying required to meet your deadline. Or, in extreme cases, writer's block has cost a wordsmith their career. But for decades, people have asked what causes writer's block? Is it a real "illness" or simply a result of "word overload"? The experts have not yet supplied us with an answer. As for the fact that it's real, I can easily vouch for that. But, is it physical, mental or a bit of both? Nobody knows. Some writer's block is triggered at the beginning of a piece. The sight of a blank page and, perhaps the knowledge of a looming deadline, have been known to elicit a mental blockage that simply prevents the writer from being able to begin. In a circumstance like this, one professor suggested to me that I just start typing. He said "type anything you like, but put words on the page." I did. And before long I had found my word groove again. But for other's that simple exercise may not be enough. Other writers find they hit the "block" when they are in the middle of a difficult passage or trying to find a certain word or key phrase. It's like that lost word or phrase puts the brakes on their mental processes. They cannot think of the term and, consequently, are "blocked" from writing further until they can move past. For them, a little time away from the work devoted to anything that doesn't involve thinking about that word or phrase may help them get them past their writer's block. But simple solutions like these don't work for everyone. For them, the onset of writer's block may signal something more serious and life changing. Some writer's block never goes away. Rare occasions have been cited where a writer simply reaches a block they cannot get past, and give up their work entirely. Fortunately, this is the most rare and least likely sort of writer's block. So, keep writing and if you hit writer's block, hit it hard enough to knock it out of your way.
