Education Why Write Do It Yourself Books

Saturday, August 18, 2012

There are a lot of different types of Do It Yourself jobs, carpenter, plumbing, car repair, and pouring concrete. All these jobs take a certain type of skill. As a mechanic since I was old enough to hold a wrench and turn the nut on a bolt I have had a very interesting career from hobby of restoring older cars to working on advanced fighter aircraft. But one of the easiest Do It Yourself repair tasks is the computer repair. Why do it yourself? Maybe the closest technician is miles away and it would cost more than the computers worth to have someone come to fix it. Or maybe the owner wants to learn how to make the repairs their self to save money or just for fun. A Do It Yourselfer are not always fully trained in the field that they want to do the task. That is why different experts write manuals and books that explain the how and why of different trades. To write a Do It Yourself book or manual takes a certain type of person. The person must be an expert in the field and have extensive experience with hands on doing the tasks it takes to complete the job. Some manuals are so technical that an average person would not be able or even inclined to purchase or try to use one. What the do it yourself person is looking for when they purchase a technical manual or book is how easy it is to follow the directions. If the author has written the book or manual with the technical jargon instead of using words that the average high school student would understand they are wasting the customer's and their own time. It is harder to write a Do It Yourself book than a technical manual. The author must know how to do the task, then take the technical explanation and turn it in to the explanation that the reader understands with out the technical terminology. With out the technical training and the experience that comes with time the author would have a hard time writing an expert Do It Yourself manual or book. With over forty years of experience as a mechanic, electrician, and over twenty as a technician in the computer industry I feel I have the necessary qualifications to write Do It Yourself books. I have written five books so far and plan on writing more. My first endeavor was a general all around computer repair book for the novice, intermediate, and professional. The main idea behind the book was that if someone wanted to repair, upgrade, or build a computer then it need to be written in every day language and not be so technical that the normal user could not read it. When it was completed my first book had over three hundred and fifty pages of text and graphics specifically for the future DIY Computer Repair person.
