The Purpose: Honoris Causa Despite criticisms, folks should take honorary degree-granting coolly. Firstly, the term 'honorary' infers honour – as the main cohesive basis of granting degrees. Honour does not necessarily imply academic distinction in books and exams; it could also cover talents, particularly in the performing arts. Thus, the question of the recipient's worthiness to gain honorary degree should be expelled. In other words, 'yes' – these singers, guitarists, designers, or dancers do deserve honorary degrees. Secondly, the critics should take another look at the award giving body – the academic institution. The popular view is that these institutions should award folks only out of academic prowess. They don't evidently see that an academic institution is also a fitting award body for contributions other than academic merit. Implying the inappropriateness of using the title 'Doctor' to individuals who hadn't taken doctorate degrees is an establishment of a divide.
