Education Personal Statement and Honorary Degrees

Friday, August 17, 2012

Fishing for higher education stands lesser importance when academic distinction is conferred to those who earned it via the vehicle of fame – this is the implicit plea for institutions, who granted Susan Boyle, Guy Garvey, Johnny Marr, Mike Leigh, Sarah Burton, and Gethin Jones their honorary degrees. Such system downplays the hard work spent by students from writing their own personal statement, finishing a BA degree, down to masters, and doctorate. Despite this poignant epithet, such feedback may not necessarily be some pointless rant. The Case

The bases for granting honorary degrees are inclusive of the following: 1.significant and remarkable contributions to a particular sector, cause, or directly to schools 2.successful igniting of inspiration to specific or broad party of sectors 3.exhibition of renowned excellence in the honorary recipient's field 4.anchoring distinction in lieu of number three Though academic institutions can bring more substance into this yearly awarding event, these top four are the 'publicly accepted' rationales. If perceived otherwise, or in concrete terms, undeserving, the institutions could always expect some form of public backlash awaiting them. School Admissions Ironically, those four aforementioned stone weights are applicable to the writing of personal statement – the first ritual students encounter for the institutional admissions. In perspective to statement writing, the bases would become writing tips: 1.Students must indicate the simplest yet profound societal contributions that they were able to generate during their secondary education. Moreover, they can use such contributions to present a visualisation of their career's active path. 2.Students should always attempt to acknowledge the people who inspired them to choose their course or prospective careers. 3.Students must exemplify excellence in every conceivable way – from personal statement writing, to presenting their academic and non-academic credentials. 4.Students have to wrap statements into distinction to get that coveted offer. The Purpose: Honoris Causa Despite criticisms, folks should take honorary degree-granting coolly. Firstly, the term 'honorary' infers honour – as the main cohesive basis of granting degrees. Honour does not necessarily imply academic distinction in books and exams; it could also cover talents, particularly in the performing arts. Thus, the question of the recipient's worthiness to gain honorary degree should be expelled. In other words, 'yes' – these singers, guitarists, designers, or dancers do deserve honorary degrees. Secondly, the critics should take another look at the award giving body – the academic institution. The popular view is that these institutions should award folks only out of academic prowess. They don't evidently see that an academic institution is also a fitting award body for contributions other than academic merit. Implying the inappropriateness of using the title 'Doctor' to individuals who hadn't taken doctorate degrees is an establishment of a divide.
