Education Disagreeing with a lecturer/professor about a grade

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Receiving a poor grade can be one of the most frustrating things that happen to you while at university. This article provides you with crucial study advice on what do to if confronted with such a situation. Firstly, assigning grades is not an exact science. Anyone who tells you that an essay is worth 63% rather than 64% does not understand the nature of assigning grades (the exception here are assignments which have definite answers such as multiple choice exams or solving mathematical problems of course!). The point here is that do not argue with a professor about 1 or 2 percentage points – there always exists a margin of error.

Secondly, if you feel unjustly treated then make an appointment to see your professor about the grade. When you meet, try to understand how your grade was calculated. It is quite possible that the professor simply made a mistake in which case your grade should be changed. Alternatively, perhaps the professor is able to demonstrate some of the errors in your work you were not aware of but this in itself is a positive thing because it presents a learning opportunity for you. In any case, remain objective and calm. By showing interest in your grade the professor will likely appreciate your dedication to your studies. Do not make the mistake of going over the same point again and again though. Certainly, ask your professor for advice on a) Where you went wrong b) What could be done to improve your work Be careful when comparing your work to that of other students, because no two pieces of original work are identical (you may indeed have quoted more sources but how does that weigh up against clarity of argument, for example). If after discussing your grade with the professor you still do not agree on the mark ask him/her to propose ways of resolving the issue. It is quite possible your professor will get a colleague to have a look at your work. Do not become too hopeful though. The colleague may side with your professor unless there is a very clear case that you have been graded unfairly. The key message is to stay polite and provide objective evidence/convincing arguments. Everyone makes mistakes, even professors! (Do not forget to be open yourself to the fact that perhaps you are making the mistake in assessing your work's merits).
