Education Being A Writer

You've always wanted to be a writer but you don't know where to begin. The first thing to think about is what kind of writer you are. But how do you do that? Some people are born knowing that they want to write. Some people decide to be a writer as they get older. One important thing to ask yourself is, "What do I want to write about?" My own experience is that I decided I wanted to be a writer shortly after I learnt how to read. I loved the world of make believe and I loved making up my own adventures. I even made my own little books which I tried to sell to my neighbours for one penny each. I never sold any. When I went to school, the career path of being a writer was never discussed so I sort of forgot about it. I was told to think about 'proper jobs'. I got a proper job working in the insurance industry but I didn't like it. That's when my dream of being a writer came back to me. I tried writing courses and different genres of writing - magazine articles, comedy (I got stuck for ideas), horror (I just didn't have the stomach for this one), spy thrillers, romance and action adventures. I even tried a Western. I didn't enjoy any of these and I thought this meant that I wasn't a writer. Then I had my first daughter and I read picture books to her. This was a magical time that we shared, it seemed that the picture books had their own magic and took us into different worlds together. I knew then that I wanted to write picture books. I found out all that I could, enrolled on a course and entered writing competitions. I sent my stories off to publishers and a short 60 rejections later I got my first offer of publication - 'The Teddy Bear Scare' Hurrah! By the way, don't worry about receiving rejections - all the best writers get these. I now have 4 picture books published with 2 more coming out this year. If I can do it then so can you. If you know you want to be a writer have a go at writing for many different genres. You will find one that 'fits', one that feels right for you. You may find several! Good luck with your writing.
