Education Become A Master Storyteller In 6 Easy Steps

Saturday, August 18, 2012

While reading an exhaustive book on the art of storytelling, I discovered a simple and profound truth buried in the final few chapters. It claims that stories will become the new products. That one hit me right between the eyeballs. The implications are huge. The world has made a massive shift in the last few years. Value is no longer placed on what I can make, or even, what I know. My value is now entirely determined by my ability to weave my skills, knowledge, and life experiences into a compelling story. "Oh no," you may be thinking, "what's my story?" Here are some tips to help you develop your own story: Pick a simple, classic story line from myths and fables. People like stories in which they already know the endings. Do you fancy yourself to be a hero, a princess, a champion of good over evil? Pare the many details of your life down to the stuff that makes sense in the story. There's no need to spill your guts to the universe. People like stories where the hero/in struggles with something but always comes back to their true nature. For example, you are an honest worker who is faced with a temptation of theft, imagines all the things the stolen money could buy, but finally, decides to do the right thing. Don't think that you are too boring to develop a great story. Some of the greatest myths have been about simple story lines. Go read a few fables at the local book store and pick one that highlights the simple things of life. Share the right juicy details. Only share secrets that help the development of the story and that you are comfortable sharing with everyone. Remember, word travels fast these days and once its on the internet, it never dies. Ask yourself if you would feel comfortable having your children read this story before you hit the Publish button. Write for babies. We're all little kids on the inside and we want to hear how you have triumphed in big and small ways. Use words that are at an eighth-grade reading level to ensure that your audience can keep up with you. Branch out into the business world. Practice writing a few personal stories first and then write a couple for business. I can think of one person right now who landed a job interview while waiting for the kids at ballet class. You never know when you may need to present a story about your business life to land that next job. Someone once said that your tattoo is the only thing you ever truly own. Sad? Profound? True? All three? To put a slightly more academic twist on it. Your knowledge is the only thing you ever truly own. And, really, knowledge is useless without a way to share it with the world. Let's take it a little further: your story is the only thing you ever truly own. So then, you are going to need a story that shares your knowledge with the world, gives them an idea of who you are and why they should care.
