Education Write A How-To Book - On Track To Quality

Saturday, July 21, 2012

When you were in school your teachers most likely spent a lot of energy trying to convince you to write well. They marked you on your grammar and your spelling, and forced you to read a library shelf full of books you had no interest in. They did that because they knew that readers of the how-to books you write will judge the quality of your books not on the quality of your ideas but on the organization and delivery quality of your writing I'm not going to spend any time discussing the details of delivery. It is the most important quality not because it is any more important but because it is the most obvious and the easiest for a reader to judge. Instead I'm going to concentrate on quality in organization. What is organization and why is it so important? Organization in this case refers to four things: 1. First is the organization of your argument. All how-to books have an underlying theme of proving that their topic is important. So have you proved your point? Does your argument move from point to point in some sort of logical manner? 2. In addition to the underlying argument, a how-to book also needs to bring some sort of structure to the topic itself. So does your book, help the reader to understand the topic? Does it provide a structure to the underlying themes of the top? Does it make sense of the topic? 3. The reality is that not all information on a topic is useful. One characteristic of knowing your subject is to know what is important and what is not important. The reader expects you to limit your information to only what is important. They expect you to remove the extra information and cut the subject down to the bone. 4. As you develop your organization there will arise chances to discuss topics not directly associated with your subject. Losing track of your subject is an unforgivable waste of your reader's time. What might be acceptable in mainstream fiction isn't acceptable at all when you write a how-to book. Because your reader can't judge the content -- after all they're reading in order to learn about the content -- they are forced to judge your how-to book and your skill at writing by relying on the other two areas. Delivery is the easiest to judge but organization is arguably far more important. Delivery, to the English teacher's eternal disgust, is important only as far as it aids or hinders readability. Only in the most extreme cases can it hinder understanding. But organization is a key to understanding. How you organize the topics when you write your how-to book will determine both the ease of learning and the depth of learning which your reader will experience. Arguably, organization is more important than the content included in your how-to book. writing essays
