Education The Character Known As Sidekick

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

The term, "Sidekick" comes to us from gamblers testing their luck at the card table in the 1600's. It meant what we now call an "ace in the hole," or a power card held in reserve for an appropriate time. Many novels utilize the services of this character called sidekick with great effect. Most often they contrast with the protagonist, but in a nonthreatening, possibly even humorous manner. The secret to the Sidekick when you write fiction? He's an interactive prop against which the hero bounces. His purpose is to enhance the characteristics of the hero and possibly offer comic relief. He also gives depth to the plot and other characters. Often a main goal is to provide counsel and/or information to the good guy. The Sidekick is also assigned those duties unsuitable for your hero or beneath his status. Another typical function is to save the hero's hide at those times when your protagonist appears most at risk. Regardless his duties, the Sidekick participates in almost all the hero's exploits, except of course, those of a physical nature. To his chagrin, the Sidekick never gets the girl. Your sidekick should be developed as well as any other important character. He, like his heroic counterpart, requires motivation, he must stay consistent to his personality and have something likable about him. His personality is typically drawn as smart, shy or even cowardly and a bit neurotic, though this stereotype is changing in literature. These days, the sidekick can be as powerful, or more so, than your hero in some ways. Think of Han Solo in Star Wars. He got the girl even before Luke knew Leia was his sister. (Come on now, as Leia was Luke's sister, this is the exception to the rule about sidekicks and the story's love interest mentioned above.) Regardless, the Sidekick's skills compliment the hero's. For example, consider Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The good doctor's personality made Sherlock a more palatable character. The Sidekick is often differentiated from the protagonist by one or more characteristics. In sci fi, for example, they are often of another species entirely. In other genres, they can differ by any number of factors which might include economic position, education, culture, race or even gender. By the way, a sidekick never has a physical relationship with the hero, which I'll explain in a moment. The primary relationship between the main character and the sidekick is trust and loyalty. Their bond is unbreakable, though the reader needn't necessarily know this. Should the hero and his sidekick part for whatever reason, it can make for an exciting scene when, at his darkest moment, the hero is saved by the unexpected return of the contrite sidekick. That bond also is why the hero and his sidekick can never have a physical relationship. That can create too many opportunities for this trust to bend and break. Further, if you're not careful, a physical relationship may even move one or both characters into a different character type altogether. This trust also is why your villain will never have a sidekick. Bad guys and their henchmen are notoriously untrustworthy. online essays

Education Free Learning E-Course - Free Training - Want To Become A Writer

Writing is a skill anyone can develop. Writers are not born but created. All the writers you know have come only this way. For becoming a Writer yourself, you have to have the will; inclination; and passion. Set your mind as a positive one. Imagine that you are a Writer and earnestly believe that you can become a Writer. The mental exercises are important. Why it is necessary to go into the mental exercises you have been learning? Well - you are going to transform yourself into a Writer- from whatever roles you have been playing, outwardly in the real world so far. You may be a student, a professional, a businessman or woman, an employee, a father, mother, brother, sister or whatever. These are identifications of you in the society. Now - are you identified as a Writer? I am sure you are not - otherwise you will not be reading this. For transforming yourself - I mean the inner-self - into a Writer, you are required to see things you have all along been seeing hitherto, differently. So it becomes imperative to prepare yourself to become a Writer. You are going to construct a skill - a skill all these years you were not having, but aspiring for, to become a Writer. You must have watched farmers preparing the ground for sowing anything. They first clean up everything from the field, connected with the previous crop, without a trace. Dig and till the land hard, to make it ready for the new seed to get into it and grow healthy. This is what you are doing now - preparing the mind as clean as a slate, to let in new thoughts afresh to stick and grow. Similarly for a brick and mortar building, a strong foundation is laid. After digging deep into the ground, hard stones are laid first, to withstand the construction for years. If you learn a skill, totally new to you, it will never go from you. For example, if you learn the skill of riding a bicycle, when you were eight or ten years old, even at the age of sixty-plus, you can ride a bicycle, whenever you get one - no matter what. Remember when you first sat on the cycle seat to learn - your mentor was giving so many instructions. Sit upright; look straight; don't bend your back; hold the handle bars tightly; this and that. You followed them earnestly - each one of them. When you learned the balancing and were on your own - how elated you were on riding the cycle, feeling on the top of the world? (It is a different matter altogether when you were a regular cyclist, not following any of the first-day-cautions and fly). This is what you are going to do when you are a full-fledged Writer..

Education Grab Readership With Full-Sensory Writing

Most Americans are visual people. We see people's points, look at problems from every angle and read between the lines. You may be wondering what's wrong with that. After all, you want your writing to be visual, right? While it's true that you want your writing to paint a picture for the reader, never neglect the power of using all five senses to draw a person into the scene. Let's take a scene from a novel, for instance. Imagine you're writing a scene between your hero and leading lady. You describe the look on the hero's face as he gazes at the love of his life, the stormy blueness of his eyes, the cleft in his chin. You add that he sees a tear trickle down her cheek. Wonderful! Now, what about the other four senses? Sound Is the hero's breathing ragged and hoarse, or is it deep and calm? What sounds linger in the background? If the setting is a castle bailey, you may hear the ring of a blacksmith's hammer or the clucking of a chicken. A more urbane setting may include the tinkle of wine glasses or the showering notes of a harp. Immerse yourself in the sounds and then write them into the scene. Smell Do your characters smell of sweat or perfume? What about their environment? Hone in on their surroundings and small what they smell. Are the scents harsh and intrusive-does the smell of horse manure waft from a nearby stable-or does the fragrance of flowers or baking bread add to the emotion of the moment? Follow your nose. Taste If your scene contains food, this is easy. Does the heroine taste the seductive flavors of strawberries and champagne, or are they dining on wild game charred over an open fire? Focus on the taste. If your scene doesn't include food, open your mind to other taste possibilities. Does the tear that trickles down the heroine's cheek run onto her lips, where she tastes the salt? Did the hero just get in a fight? A cut lip could leave him with the metallic taste of blood in his mouth. Touch Touch is explosive and emotive. As he reaches out to cup her face in his hands, how do his hands feel on her face? Are they rough and calloused from working long hours, or are they the smooth hands of a rich man? Whether your characters are dressed in silk, homespun or buckskin, focus on the feel of the material against the skin. Think about every texture in the scene and how it might play into the emotion you're trying to convey. Once you take the time to focus, it's easy to see how the use of all five senses can enhance any scene. Don't imagine, either, that this only works for fiction. Whatever your writing genre, make it a full-sensory experience for your reader. You will boost your readership and leave them coming back for more! resume writing services

Education Become A Published Author - 7 Tips To Format Your Book

I would suggest that you format your book as you write it. That way, you will have a very good idea of how many pages you have written, and how many words will be required for each chapter. You want it to be laid out professionally, so please follow my suggestions. Here are my 7 top tips to format your book as you write it! 1) Decide on the dimensions of your book. By that I mean the length and width of it. The thickness of course, will depend on how many pages are in your book. 2) Opt for a popular size. As you can imagine, there are plenty of sizes to choose from. I would suggest 6" by 9", which is ideal for a book of around 100 pages. 3) Use the Page Setup facility in your writing document to set the size of the page to 6" by 9". 4) Because you are writing a book, select the option to use mirror margins. Here are suggestions for the margins. Set the top and bottom to 0.75" and both the inside and outside margins to 0.5". The gutter should be set to 0.35". 5) In respect of the font and font size, I suggest you use Garamond 11. For sub-headings, use a slightly larger font in bold to make it stand out. For chapter headings, you should use a very much larger font, and I suggest Garamond 24. 6) For the first paragraph of each chapter, use a large dropped capital for the first letter. This certainly adds quite a bit of professionalism to the finished layout! For all subsequent paragraphs, ensure that the first line has an indent of 1". 7) When you start a new chapter, have the chapter title sit approximately half way down the page. In my opinion, this makes the chapter title really stand out, and it is clear when a new chapter has begun. By using these suggestions, you will find that it won't take long to fill up the pages in your book! By formatting the book as you write, it not only allows you to see your progress, but also avoids the tedious task of formatting the book once it has been written.

Education The Bible, Your First Source of Truth

While you are searching for the truth, do not forget to look to the first source of truth: your Bible, for it is our instruction manual. It is the living, breathing Word of God. The Bible is good for all instruction. Psalm 119:160 All Your words are true; all Your righteous laws are eternal. In present Christianity, many of us spend a lot of time searching for direction, inspiration and motivation to live a Godly life. I am one of these people, and I hope you are, also. Do not neglect the importance of your daily devotion, I've used them often myself. I also have social network friends who post their daily devotions as well as social networking sites that I go to on a daily basis. They are one of the best ways to see real life situations of today compared with situations that occurred during biblical times. Christian books do this as well. There are so many great Christian books written that are gender and age specific, or not, dealing with most every trial we as Christians face on a daily basis. Listen to Christian radio, Christian Books or the Bible on CD while you're in the car. Have Christian TV on while at home. There are many way to fill your ears, eyes and mind with the word of God. There are many sources where we can learn about the word of God, how it works and how to apply it to our daily lives. What we must remember is that while all of these are wonderful sources, we must return to our Bibles for the most pure and original guidance. While on your journey in search of God's truth, read your Bible, and continue to supplement this truth with a Daily Devotion, Bible Study and Christian Books, Christian radio and TV. Keep your mind focused on the Lord, praying without ceasing. Pray first thing when your eyes open, last thing while closing your eyes and before you read anything. Whether it be your Bible, your daily devotion or a Christian book of your choice. Pray that God will help you to understand and apply what you read. You'll be amazed and delighted by how these simple actions will enrich your life. I wish you all the best and that you find serenity, joy and that you find God's will for your life.

Education Autobiographical Essays, a Brief Description

Autobiographic essays are usually a requirement when applying for college and university scholarship. These essays are basically an amalgamation of narrative and personal essay that is also known as personal narrative essay. Motive of this composition is to give your reader an insight into your life and highlight your personal aspects. The typical narrative personal essay is about 1000 to 3000 words in length but this aspect usually depends upon you and the university or college you are going to apply. Although these essays are aimed to describe personal experiences but many students commit a common mistake that shatters their first impression, when they start this project, they try to cover and discuss their entire life. This step not only requires a writer a lengthy writing process but also bore the readers. This writing mission should confine to only one aspect that you think you can describe and illustrate well. Students should understand the essence of this activity as autobiographical essay is to identify certain characteristics in your personality and then require writing the event surrounding that factor. Another important thing that must be remembered while starting the essay is not to turn it into chronological record of your life; you are not going to submit it to national database. It should be the depiction of your life's most enlightened features and must have a theme that illustrates your personality. You have to take one side of your personality as the theme of an essay and the aspect you want your readers to know and that is not apparent from your record. After deciding the theme and basic topic of your essay, now it's time to establish an outline, outline is written in the same way as the general essay. Now you need to think about certain events and happening of your life that support the main subject but make sure that only important things should be included and unnecessary tidbits must be left out.

After completing the outline, still you have a lot more things that are remained untouched. Rough draft of your essay is the next step, now you have enough points to discuss and build the body of the essay. Outline mentions the important aspects that you have identified and decided to incorporate into the discussion and in essay's rough draft you are going to extend them further. During this exclusive sort of writing, you must remember that you are expected to increase readers' curiosity and must present a human side of the story. By adding emotions, feelings and expression into the stuff you can easily keep your reader till the end of the essay because they are going to read your life experiences therefore, they expect something that has some twists, transformations, reactions and interesting turning points of an individual's life. A good tip for personal essay writer is always include and use your own feelings because it is the only way you can devote your writing a unique and individualistic touch but writer should not get too much personal otherwise it can ruin the whole impact and purpose of the essay. The last and foremost requirement for every writing project is to recheck and reread whatever you have written because there might be some errors and mistakes obstructing the writing flow.
