Education The Secret To Writing The Perfect Book

Perfect. It is an oft-used term for so many different aspects of life. Perfection is that elusive, ultimate goal for anything a person cares to excel at. It is an ideal that keeps us reaching for the stars. My advice? Spend less time reaching and more time getting your book published. Every year, I teach hundreds of students how to write and publish their own books. Those students come to my classes with the intention of learning how to make money as published authors. I teach them everything they need to know, but many still have not published their books. That's because they became bogged down in their search for perfection. One student of mine in particular started to write her book back in 1967. She came to my workshop a few years ago and was still not finished with her manuscript. When I asked why she didn't just publish her book and get it to start working for her, she simply explained that she was in a writing club meant to improve her work. She said the club members were constantly making changes and corrections and many areas would become stalled and not move forward. This student of mine will likely never reach a point of completion. She has been working on her book for so long that her view of what makes it perfect will never come to fruition. Although she is an extreme case, I see so many of my students fall into the trap that I like to call the "perfection problem." So what exactly is the secret to writing the perfect book? It's to understand that there is no such thing as a perfect book! Once an author comes to terms that a book will never reach unattainable standards of perfection, he or she can move on and focus on finishing the manuscript and getting it published. A mediocre book that is actually being purchased and read is much better than a book that never ends up being finished. If you don't believe me, visit Amazon.com and search through most book reviews. You will see that 90 percent of reviewers will give a book a positive assessment, and 5 to 10 percent of reviewers will be negative. Learn to get over the negativity quickly, and you are on your way to the real accomplishment: finishing your book so that people have the chance to review it at all!

Education Beginning To Journal

Journaling, it isn't something you hear a lot of people doing anymore. In a day in age where blogging is the hottest thing, taking out a pen and paper to write manually is almost unheard of, doesn't that take too much time when we can type so much faster? Maybe, but, the benefits can sometimes outweigh the time issue that is involved. Sure, I love blogging. I am a blogger and I believe blogging has benefits that are quite similar to that which I receive from journaling, but journaling is a bit more private for me, and thus still appropriate for me to engage in because quite frankly I won't share everything on my blog. A blog after all is almost permanent and can be read by almost anyone who has access to the Internet and the savvy to search for you. Journaling only the other hand, is just as easy, if not easier than blogging. With journaling you can talk freely, through the written word without fear or reservation. You can scrawl in handwriting commonly known as chicken scratch where it is almost illegible but can be therapeutic in benefits to you. What it looks like doesn't matter, grammar doesn't matter. Honestly, it doesn't even matter if it makes good sense. It is for your benefit and your benefit only. So, what you write frankly does not matter. What does matter is that you write. That you allow the feelings, thoughts and emotions that you feel in your heart and mind to be released onto paper. With journaling the most important thing is that you do it. You just start writing really, it is as simple as that. Write about how you feel, write about what you are worrying about, write about what you hope to accomplish, or what you wish you could do or be. Write about anything and everything in your life. Share your prayers, your hopes, your dreams, write letters to yourself or record letters to God. There are so many options and the process can leave you feeling so much better you will definitely want to do it again. That's why journaling is a bit addictive. Once you start, most likely, you won't want to stop. You will begin to fill journal after journal excited about the possibilities of filling those stark white pages with print. It will become a hobby, a true pastime that you continue to enjoy for many years.

Education How To Write A Book Proposal That Will Get You Published

So you've written your book. You've found an agent. They loved what they saw. Now you've got one question in mind "How to write a book proposal that will get you published?" The key is to understand why you're writing the proposal and to structure your proposal appropriately. At one time there were two proposals. The first was produced by the writer and really just expanded on the query letter. What exactly are you going to write? Add a couple of lines for who you are and sit back. The editor then researched the market for the book and prepared the proposal to put before the executive publishers. That's not the case today. The economy has removed the luxury of having an insider prepare the proposal. It falls on the writer to write a single proposal covering both market and what the book is about. So the way to write a book proposal that will get you published is to write a proposal that will convince the executive publisher to invest money in your book. And since most books lose money, that can be difficult. To do that you need to write a book proposal that is part description of the book and part marketing tool. You should always include the following sections: 1. An executive summary, because executives are too busy to read. Hit just the highlights. Who you are. Why you are perfect to write the book. What the book is about. What the market for the book is. If you've hit a page, single spaced, you're being too detailed. Rewrite it. Think rear cover copy. Quick, specific, highlights. This is what really sells your book. Blow this and the rest of your proposal won't be read. 2. An overview and introduction. This is where you'll sell the idea of the book. Think in terms of what you'll write and why you are perfect to write it. Keep it simple and high level. This is the section that will sell editors and middle management. 3. The market and competition. Who has already published in this area? Why would people buy your book rather than theirs? How big is the market? Here is where you're going to prove that there is a market for your book and that you can get a nice slice of it. 4. Outline of the book. So now that you've gotten the important part out of the way, back to the product itself. What's it going to look like? 5. Two sample chapters. Here's where you're going to prove that you can actually write. 6. Publishing details. How do you see the book's end product? This is for those people that need to actually print the book. 7. About the author. So far you've (hopefully) sold them on the book. Now you have to prove that you are the right person to write it. Once you've written all this up, you need to package it well. After all, like any other product packaging can either help or hurt sales. So package it well. Make it look good! Just as you would wear a suit to an interview, you need to make a good first impression. So have you gotten the impression that a book proposal is a marketing piece? I hope so. That's how to write a book proposal that will get you published. Realize it is your sales pamphlet for the decision maker. And make it look good in their eyes. Make them buy. thesis writing service

Education It's A Process

Writing is a process. Opinion? Fact! Many people I know are taken aback when they make an attempt to write a piece of any substantial length. They think like this: "He sits down at his lovely, mahogany desk and gets out his pad of paper or his antiquated typewriter. He flexes his fingers, and grabs his favorite fountain pen or starts typing on the keys. Suddenly, words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters fly onto the paper. After some pre-determined time, Real Writer puts down his pen or takes his fingers off the keys, stretches, sighs a sigh of satisfaction, and gets up from the desk. He brushes his hands together - another successful day of writing done and pages of manuscript in the hopper."- Dawn Goldberg This may be a nice image to have, but it's far from the truth. Real writers actually go through a clearly defined, 3 step process in writing everything longer than one sentence. Before-writing: (For lack of a better term!) Before-writing is pretty much just planning. Throwing ideas around. Chucking everything on paper. Lots of writers have a little book just for scribbling random ideas, quotes, sayings, phrases, or anything that might be useful. It's completely disorganized and looks like it belongs in the bin, but writers live by it! It often winds up being an invaluable source of creativity, and has made many writers rich and famous. This step is crucial, so don't skip it even when you're in a hurry! Writing: Self-explanatory... I hope. This is sometimes the only step anyone takes note of. People think it's a waste of time to plan and edit their work. As long as it's done. Bad idea!!! But you do need something to edit, so while this is the least important of the steps, it's still necessary. Obviously. After-writing: This is the revising and editing of your work. A common misconception with editing is that all this entails is cutting out bad sentences and phrases. Wrong again! In most cases, you've gotta almost re-write the whole piece! If you're looking to create a really good piece of writing, you've got to edit properly, and if that means writing the whole piece over, then do it, don't be lazy. One more thing- don't do all 3 steps at once, which I know is tempting! Don't write whole paragraphs when you plan. Don't edit while you're writing. You need to be able to view your work as a finished product, on which to improve. Okay, knock yourself out!

Education How To Start A Novel

How to start a novel begins by writing a short summary like those that will appear on the back when it is published. Many novelists will start writing a novel by defining its essence, a short, conscious statement of about 2-3 sentences, 5 at most, which can later be trimmed even further. With this statement or description of your novel, the novelist or novel ghostwriter can then begin asking questions and filling in the blanks. In other words, consider the summary of your initial story to be similar to those that appear on the back of almost every published novel. The author has written a few sentences describing his or her novel, but has not told the potential reader everything, or even spoiled the ending. Nevertheless, while at the book store browsing books to read, you will have a better understanding about the novel by reading the back. At the same time, you will also have a great deal of questions, which have been focused or directed by the few sentences describing the novel. This is how to start a novel. The answers to these questions, when applied to your own short novel summary, will help you to begin to outline your novel. Once the novel is outlined with a one to two sentence summary of each chapter, you can then go about developing each individual chapter...just fill in the blanks. It may change slightly as you start chapter one, but the main point is to begin with the basics. What parts are absolutely necessary and essential to your novel? Complete these parts first. Then, as you reread each of these parts once the rough draft of your novel has been written, you will in all likelihood have many additional ideas and determine additional parts and scenes that will strengthen your novel. Knowing how to start a novel can begin by writing a short, novel summary like those that would appear on the back of the novel once it has been published. With this succinct, yet general few sentences or a paragraph, beginning novelists can act as a potential reader, whose mind will naturally begin to form questions about the summary. These questions -- who, what, when, where, how, why -- are applied to the little bit that is revealed with the summary on the back of the book. It is important that your novel answer all the main questions your readers will have. When you start a novel, first write these questions as they relate to the brief summary. How you answer these question will be the creative part of your novel. How and by which characters these answers are told is the creative part of your novel, which can be further developed once you have finished how to start a novel.
